The play is set in 1940 in the study of Captain Bevilacqua, a 55-year-old shipowner from Genoa who is single, honest, and loyal. Starting from nothing, he has built up a small fleet of merchant ships and is also the mayor of the Ligurian Provveditoria. During a trip, he is at the helm when a wave hits the sailing ship, causing chest pains. After a few days, he has an X-ray and receives a tragic diagnosis: he has only a few months to live. From that moment on, the captain decides to speak his mind, exposing deceit and telling the truth to everyone, including the managers of the Provveditoria. However, the situation is turned upside down when it is discovered that his X-ray has been swapped with that of someone else with the same name. Thanks to the tenacity of his secretary and Professor Brunelli, the truth comes to light. The captain is found to be in good health and returns to his normal life in a classic Genoese comedy of misunderstandings and humour.
